A method of automatically creating a digital map of an animal barn (1), the barn comprising a plurality of types of barn elements (4,5,6,7,8,17,18,20,22), a plurality of animals, and an animal locating system (3), the method comprising the steps of • automatically collecting position data with the animal locating system about the position of said at least one animal in said barn as a function of time • providing, for at least a plurality of types of barn elements, a first set of criteria for correlating said position data to said type of barn element and a second set of criteria for determining the position of said type of barn element • automatically applying the sets of criteria to the position data, • automatically creating the map with at least said first barn element and the type and position thereof.
