The method involves calculating (S1) a thermal power of the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine from state parameters of the internal combustion engine. The efficiency of the device is calculated (S2) from the state parameters of the device. An output power of the device is calculated (S3) from the thermal power of the exhaust gas and the efficiency of the device. The output power of the device is detected (S4). The calculated output power is compared (S5) with the detected output power of the device. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a device for operating a device for waste heat recovery of an internal combustion engine; and (2) a computer program product with a program code unit for executing the waste heat recovery device operating method.
