A method for assessing system status includes receiving user-provided information pertaining to operation of a system (S41). A dependency model of the system is constructed based on the received information (S43a/b). A logical model of the system is constructed (S43) and combined with the dependency model (S46) when it is determined that the user-provided information is sufficient to construct the logical model (S42). Sensor data from sensors installed within the system is monitored, the combined model is applied to the sensor data when the combined model is available and the dependency model is applied to the sensor data when the combined model is not available (S48). A set of abnormal system components is determined from the application of the combined model/dependency model to the sensor data and an assessment of system status is determined based on the set of abnormal system components
