The method involves receiving hand gesture by a detection device (16) that is provided in the form of a camera with several pixels as resolution, and individually evaluating the pixels with respect to light absorption of the pixels. The light reception of pixels is compared with each other for detecting movement of hand as hand gesture with evaluation by extending over the pixels shifting of the incident light and the shading due to the movement. The average of light reception of group of pixels is taken as the value of light reception of pixel. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a detection unit; and (2) a household appliance.
