[Also in Divisions C3 and D1] The invention comprises compounds of the formula where R 1 is hydrogen or a. C 1-5 alkyl group or halogen, R 2 is an alkyl, alkoxyalkoxy, alkenyl or aralkyl group and X is chlorine or the group -OR 3 where R 3 is an alkyl, alkenyl or alkoxyalkyl radical. The compounds are made by condensing 1 mol. of the appropriate 7-amino-3- aryl-coumarin compound with 1 mol. of cyanuric chloride and 1 or 2 mol. of an appropriate alcohol, alkenol or aralkanol in the presence of an acid-binding agent. The novel compounds are used as optical brightening agents (see Divisions C3 and D1). A number of compounds are specified. |
