PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microorganism or a ketone reductase that can stereoselectively manufacture 1-benzyl-4-hydroxy-3-piperidinecarboxylic acid alkyl ester from 1-benzyl-4-oxo-3-piperidinecarboxylic acid alkyl ester.SOLUTION: The production method of 1-benzyl-4-hydroxy-3-piperidinecarboxylic acid alkyl ester is characterized by carrying out stereoselective ketone reduction of 1-benzyl-4-oxo-3-piperidinecarboxylic acid alkyl ester by using (i) a microorganism of the genus Curtobacterium, the genus Candida or the genus Bacillus, or a preparation thereof, or (ii) an enzyme that can achieve stereoselective ketone-reduction of 1-benzyl-4-oxo-3-piperidinecarboxylic acid alkyl ester.
