The method involves actuating a brake pedal (3) by an electrical drive to generate cylinder pressure in hydraulically operated wheel brakes (1). Braking operations are detected by using a pressure sensor (10) and/or a displacement sensor or angle sensor arranged at a main brake cylinder (5) or the brake pedal. Additional pressure is generated in one of the hydraulically operated wheel brakes in case of failure of one of electro-mechanical actuatable wheel brakes (2) that are executed as a generator (16) to perform recuperation of brake energy to charge a vehicle battery. An independent claim is also included for a brake assembly.
