The device (2) has seat surface heating zones (6a-6e) attached to respective seat areas (5a-5e) of a vehicle seat (1). A controlling and/or regulating device (7) individually controls the zones, and arranged in the vehicle seat. One of the seat areas is occupied by a person such that occupied seat area is formed. Another seat area is unoccupied by the person such that unoccupied seat is formed. The regulating device is connected with the heating zones, and controls the heating zone attached to the occupied seat area different from the heating zone attached to the unoccupied seat area. An independent claim is also included for a method for heating a vehicle seat by a vehicle seat heating device.
