Assembly and welding of car exhaust systems - having individual components selected and positioned in line, checked for accuracy, then welded and checked for pressure tightness

A procedure for assembling and welding a complete exhaust system for a car out of prefabricated components e.g. pipe bends, silencers, catalyser, intermediate pipes, etc has the components positioned according to the particular layout for the car and then a plausibility test is carried out. Then welding of certain components takes place. Next comes a test for the seals in the unit containing the catalyser and the pipe bends. Finally the remaining units are all welded together and the complete system passes out to the next stage. The individual components are selected from a store using a programmable robot system with bar codes to recognise them.
