PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light modulator having a waveguide structure including a nitride semiconductor, which achieves a desired modulation operation.SOLUTION: The light modulator comprises: a core 102 composed of a first undoped nitride semiconductor, formed on a substrate 101, and having a rectangular shape with a top face as a c plane in a cross-sectional view; two carrier block layers 103 composed of a second undoped nitride semiconductor having a band-gap energy larger than that of the first nitride semiconductor, and formed in contact with a side face of the core 102 across the core 102; and two electrode layers 104 composed of a third n-type nitride semiconductor having a band-gap energy smaller than that of the second nitride semiconductor, and formed in contact with the carrier block layers 103 across the core 102 so as to have a top face as the c plane. |
