In the homogeniser shown in Fig. 1, fluid under pressure entering at 44 flows through the gap between the surface of valve member 52 and the frusto-conical bearing surface of valve seat 46 and out by 56. Valve member 52 is guided by portions 54 of seat member 46, and may be urged towards seat member 46 by spring 84 the loading on which may be manually adjusted. A flexible diaphragm 60 may be used to seal the lower casing 12 from the spring assembly casing. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) frusto conical or alternatively spherical wall 94 of valve member 52a engages the toroidal surface 46a of the valve seat member. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) valve member 52b and valve seat member 46b are formed with stepped frusto conical surfaces.
