Bands of unvulcanized tread material 7, 8, 9 are applied, with gaps 10, 11 between to a prepared tyre carcase and rolled down under mechanically applied pressure, transverse grooves 12 being cut in the bands before vulcanizing in an autoclave. The gaps and grooves may be straight or curved, and may vary in width. The grooves, the depth of which may be ¥ the thickness of the bands, may be cut prior to the application thereof. Infiltration of vapour into the crevices of the tyre during vulcanization is prevented by the application of a protecting strip by the same process. |
