A shelf bearer of adjustable length comprises a bar 3 with upper and lower edge channels 9, 10 at each of its ends to slidably receive a support fitting 11 which locks by wedging in the channels under the action of thrust applied to a fitting 11. The fitting 11 includes an oblique tongue 5 which hinges at one end at a flexible part 14 attached to the base 12 of the fitting 11. The free end 6 of the tongue 5 protrudes above the upper edge 1 of the fitting 11 and bears on the base of the upper channel 9 to effect a wedge fit. A rib 7 on the tongue 5 provides a handgrip to draw the fitting 11 into the channels 9, 10, the tongue 5 flexing away from engagement with the base of the channel 9 due to the force applied to the rib 7. Inward load applied to the outer end of the fitting 11 causes an opposite flexing of the tongue 5 and increases the wedging action. A metal insert may be fixed in a slot 8 in the end of the tongue 5. |
