The method involves arranging a workpiece i.e. metal sheet (12), between a blank holder (16) and a folding bed (14). The workpiece in a folding region (28) is bent and folded based on a working stroke of a tool (10). A folding jaw (22) is moved into a travelling direction against a spring force produced by a spring element (38) i.e. gas compression spring, where the jaw is moved into another travelling direction by the spring force of the spring element. A part of the folding region is pressed against a contact surface (32) of the folding bed by the jaw when the workpiece is folded. An independent claim is also included for a device for folding a workpiece.
