The device (100) has an interface unit (110) couplable to a high volt network (20) of a motor vehicle (10), and a sensor device (120) connected with the interface unit and detecting an operating mode of the network over the interface unit. A computer device (130) determines a predominating voltage level of the network based on the detected operating mode, and checks the network at absence of voltage by a comparison of the determined voltage level with a reference value. A warning apparatus emits a warning signal when no absence of voltage is present. The warning apparatus is designed as an optical warning apparatus e.g. warning lamp such as LED or incandescent lamp, and an acoustic warning apparatus i.e. buzzer. The sensor device is designed as a voltmeter or an ammeter. An independent claim is also included for a method for checking a high volt network of a motor vehicle at absence of voltage.
