In a steelworks installation iron is tapped directly from a blast-furnace into a steel-making vessel which is readily movable linearly in relation to the furnace, as by being mounted on a railway truck. The vessel may be a top-blown converter which is moved from the charging position equipped with one or more oxygen lances; alternatively it may be a hearth type furnace which may have a removable roof or no roof to facilitate charging. The plant may include in series with the steel-making vessel a continuous casting installation, means for cutting up the product thereof, conveyers leading to a pusher furnace and a processing plant such as a rolling mill. |
