Multicolour yarns in which the colour varies continuously around the peripheries are produced by an uninterrupted process which comprises (a) initially passing the yarn over a printing paste-applicator roller which is coated with a thin film of printing paste mixed with a dyestuff, thus applying a ribbon of dye to the yarn and (b) directly afterwards treating the complete periphery of the wet yarn leaving the roller with a solution of a second dyestuff. The printing paste-applicator roller preferably has a slightly porous surface and rotates in the opposite direction to the direction of travel of the yarn. The contact time between the yarn and the roller may be varied by mounting a carrier roller in front of the paste roller which can have its height altered. A number of printing paste-applicator rollers can also be used to apply a number of separate ribbons. The second dyestuff is preferably applied by passing the wet yarn from the paste roller through a pair of rollers, the lower one of which dips into a bath containing the dye, which exert a squeezing action.
