A catalyst for the conversion of hydrocarbons consists of composite masses, each of the masses comprising a physical mixture of particles of alumina upon which is deposited platinum and of particles of a calcined silica-alumina cracking component, the alumina and platinum deposited thereon comprising from about 10-90% by weight of the final catalyst, the platinum on the alumina comprising from about 0,1-2,5% by weight of the final catalyst and the SiO2-Al2O3 cracking component being characterized by having an Al2O3 content of from 7-50% and at least one of manganese oxide, sulphide or sulphate deposited on the SiO2-Al2O3 cracking component, the Mn of the Mn compound being in an amount ranging from 0,25-1% by weight of the SiO2-Al2O3 cracking component. The catalyst particles may take the form of extruded shapes, e.g. rods or pellets. Platinum may be deposited on any commercially available Al2O3, e.g. chi, gamma or eta-Al2O3. Alternatively Pt may be deposited on an aluminium hydrate which is subsequently converted to Al2O3 by calcination. Deposition of Pt may be effected from H2PtCl6, platinous or platinic tetrammino chloride or hydroxide, platinic chloride, chloroplatinous acid or ammonium chloroplatinate. Mn is preferably deposited on the SiO2-Al2O3 component by impregnating with manganese chloride, nitrate, sulphate, acetate, benzoate, formate, and lactate, followed by calcination at any stage in the catalyst manufacture, and optionally with reduction by treatment with H2S1. Regeneration of spent catalyst is effected by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere. Comparative examples describe the use of these catalysts for reforming petroleum hydrocarbons at 600-1000 DEG F., 50-1,000 p.s.i.g. and 0,75-2 vol./vol./hr with 5-15 mols. of hydrogen per mol. of charge or for isomerizing alkyl benzenes, e.g. xylenes, at 700-1,000 DEG F., 50-500 p.s.i.g. and 0,5-6 vol./vol./hr. with 1-20 mols. of hydrogen per mol. of charge.
