977,105 Refining steel. REINSTAHL HUTTENWERKE A.G. Feb. 24, 1961 [Feb. 29, 1960], No. 6905/61. Heading C7D. Steel is refined by treating the molten steel with a reactive gas, which is free from nitrogen and atomic hydrogen and is capable of reacting with the steel to reduce its impurity content, and a carrier gas, such as CO, N 2 or A, simultaneously or successively in either order, the gas or gases above the melt surface being maintained at a pressure below atmospheric. The reactive gas may comprise one or more of a gaseous or vaporized halogen, e.g. Cl 2 (as oxidizing agent) or inorganic or organic halogen-containing compounds, e.g. AlCl 3 , and other volatile chlorides, CCl 4 , C 6 Cl 6 , and H 2 (as reducing agent). Both gases may be applied to the melt with the aid of lances or nozzle plates. U.S.A. Specification 1,921,060 is referred to. |
