The present invention relates to the use of an electrocatalytic frustrated Lewis pair system in either an energy generation device such as a fuel cell or an energy storage device such as a battery or capacitor. Specifially, a fuel cell or similar uses a Lewis acid (A) and a Lewis base (B), which produces heterolytic cleavage of dihydrogen (as in H2 + A + B = AH- + BH+) followed by the splitting of proton and electrons away from the AH- species, and especially where the Lewis acid and Lewis base form a frustrated Lewis pair. Also claimed is the electrochemical oxidation of dihydrogen using a Lewis acid, a Lewis base and an electrode, preferably by hererolytic cleavage and then electrochemical oxidation. |
