A solution for activating iron, steel, zinc, cadmium and other metal and alloy surfaces prior to phosphate treatment comprises a water-soluble salt of zirconium, e.g. zirconium halides or sulphate and disodium ortho-phosphate, with or without a titanium compound, dissolved in water so that after slow evaporation the residue contains .005 to 20 per cent. zirconium by weight. Titanium when added may be in the form of tetrachloride, trichloride, hydroxide or titanium potassium oxalate. The powdered product is dissolved to give an aqueous solution containing .1 per cent. to 2 per cent. of disodium phosphate and .001 per cent. to .1 per cent. zirconium, or zirconium and titanium if present. The metal can be sprayed or dipped in the solution. Specification 560,847 is referred to.
|
