A lift car 3 is supported in a shaft from a point M so that the weight of the car and its load always tend to cause rotation of the car about a horizontal axis passing through the suspension point in the same sense. Guide pulleys 14, 15 and 14<SP>1</SP>, 15<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2 (not shown), run on a vertical guide 2, and a further roller 16 prevents rotation of the car by engaging a guide 17. A single helical guide may replace the guide 2 so that the car rotates as it moves up and down thereby serving angularly spaced exit points. The guide 2 may be replaced by a cylindrical bar on which run pairs of rollers with concave surfaces, Fig. 3 (not shown). The car may be raised by an hydraulic ram instead of a cable in which case the guide 17 is dispensed with. Two guide members may be provided as illustrated in Fig. 5 (not shown). |
