[Also in Divisions A3 and A5] A vortex tube assembly is mounted on a frame adapted to be worn by a person requiring a supply of air for cooling and/or breathing purposes, the cold air outlet of the vortex tube being connected either to a breathing mask or to means for distributing the air in a protective suit. As shown, a vortex tube 7<SP>1</SP> is mounted on a frame 5, 28, 29 provided with shoulder straps 26, 27 and is supplied with compressed air via flexible conduits 1<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>1</SP>. The cold air outlet 9<SP>1</SP> of the tube is connected to flexible conduits 18, 19, 20 and 21 which extend into the leg and arm portions of the suit and have outlet slots along their lengths. A further conduit 22 supplies cold air to a distribution ring 23 in the head portion of the suit. The hot air outlet 17<SP>1</SP> of the tube is insulated and discharges to the exterior of the suit, a throttling valve being provided in the hot air outlet for controlling the temperatures of the hot and cold air streams. Conduits 18 to 21 are formed of a plastics material and serve to silence the cold air stream. In the embodiment of Fig. 7 (not shown) the cold air outlet is connected to a breathing mask via a cylindrical container packed with silencing material. |
