A variable-speed planetary gear has an inertia mass in the form of a liquid, or of particles suspended in liquid, carried in tubes fast with its planetary pinion. In one form, an input shaft 11, Fig. 2, carries a fork 13 journalling a spindle 19 fast with a bevel planet pinion 21 meshing a bevel sun gear 25 fast on an output shaft 27, and nested tubes 39, 41 rotating with the planet spindle transmit liquid, e.g. mercury, or another liquid containing suspended particles, between chambers 29, 31. An idle disc 23 balances the planet pinion 21. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the idle disc is replaced by an additional planet pinion journalled freely upon the planet spindle, to mesh both a sun-gear fast on the driven shaft and the toothed end face of an extra fork carried by the input shaft. In another modification, Fig. 11 (not shown), the tubes 39 feed into finned cooling chambers carried on the outer surfaces of the driving fork arms. The planetary gear transmits drive only from the input to the output shaft, and not in the opposite direction. In an arrangement permitting reversal of the direction of drive transmission between two shafts, Fig. 12 (not shown), two oppositely-arranged planet gears as described are disposed on two parallel sets of shafts interconnected by two simple trains of spur gears. In another modification, electromagnet armatures 77, 79; 78, 80, Fig. 10, are energized to adjust the flow of liquid, e.g. mercury &c., through the tubes 39, and electrodes 110, 111 are similarly energized to transmit current through the liquid and adjust its flow. Current flow in the armature solenoids and through the electrodes is induced by energizing coils 85 carried by the input fork to produce a field in which coils 90 on the spindle are rotated by the motion of the planet pinion 21.
