In a lathe having a bed, a carriage mounted on the bed and supporting a cross-slide and a transmission base attached to the carriage, first and second reversing gear means are provided which in co-operation with first and second hand-levers effect initiation and selection of traversing movements of the carriage and/or the cross-slide. The first hand-lever 16 is mounted on a shaft 12 within the transmission box 10 and is movable about the axis of the shaft 12 and effects engagement and disengagement of the clutch mechanism i and/or of the lead screw nut 4 to control the movement of the carriage by the lead screw when screw cutting is being carried out on a workpiece. The second lever 15 on the transmission box 10 co-operates with shafts 13 and 14 which are coaxial with shaft 12 and which by movement of the handle in alternate directions at right angles actuate the respeltive first and second gear means g and h, the direction of displacement of the lever 15 being indicative of the direction of movement of the respective slides. The movements produced by the lever 15 are only initiated when the lever 16 is in the upright position A which affords some protection against accidental displacement of the lever 15 by the movement of an operator working at the machine. |
