An apparatus 5 for stopping a vehicle 2 having an internal combustion engine 3, has a projectile launcher 8 for launching a projectile 9 towards an open end 16 of an exhaust pipe 4 of the vehicle 2. The projectile 9 to be launched has a material that is arranged to expand when exposed to heat from the exhaust pipe 4, the material arranged to obstruct exhaust expelled from the exhaust pipe 4 so as to cause the vehicle 2 to stop when the projectile 9 is at least partially within the exhaust pipe 4. The apparatus may also include an aiming device that detects heat from the open end 16 of the exhaust 4, or may use a reflected laser beam light system to guide the projectile. The apparatus may be attached to a pursuit vehicle and may be used by the Police to stop a fleeing vehicle without injury or damage. |
