Apparatus for aluminothermic welding rails in situ consists of a frame clampable to the rails and carrying rail aligning and weld flash removing devices and a reaction crucible. The frame comprises end members 10, 11 connected by hollow longitudinal members 12, 13 joined by hollow transverse members 14, 15, the hollow members constituting an oil reservoir. Pivotal clamping members 25 carried by the frame are actuated by cylinders 27 to clamp against the outer sides of the rails 1. The frame has rollers 33 on the end members 10, 11 and engaging the inner sides of the rails 1. Flanged rollers 21 engaging the rail heads are mounted on arms 20 pivoted to the frame and support the frame either in the welding position shown or, when the arms 20 are pivoted, in a raised position for movement along the rails. The aligning devices comprise pivoted arms 37 having recessed ends fitting over the rail heads and movable transversely to align the rails 1 by manually actuated eccentrics. The reaction crucible 9 when not in use is supported on a stand 24 on the frame and during welding is mounted on a support 8 clamped to a rail 1. The mould 5 is also supported by a clamp 6 on a rail 1. After welding, flash is removed by a channel-shaped cutter 54 having an oblique cutting edge 56, the cutter being detachably secured to the rod 52 of an hydraulic ram 46 journalled to a clamp 50 gripping a rail 1. Rollers 47 on the ram 46 support the cutting device when the clamp 50 is released, the device being moved on its rollers 47 across a platform 48 into position to work on the other rails 1. The ram 46 and cylinders 27 are supplied with pressure fluid from a pressure accumulator pressurized by a pump 59 driven by an I.C. engine, the pump drawing liquid from the hollow members of the frame. |
