Printing paste comprises an aqueous suspension of (a) 30-83 wt.% of water, (b) 0.2-40 wt.% of a hydrophilic polymer, (c) 1-35 wt.% of a polar organic solvent having a vapor pressure of less than 10 kPa and (d) 0.01-2 wt.% of a defoamer. An independent claim is included for a method for patterning a substrate comprising applying a printing paste (2) on a substrate (1) in a pattern or a structure, applying an active layer (3, 3a) on the printing paste and onto the substrate and removing the printing paste with an aqueous solvent with at least 90 wt.% of water, to obtain a pattern of the active layer on the substrate.
