Novel compounds of formula (wherein A is an oxo or ketal group, B is alkyl, D is H or optionally substituted alkyl, E is an optionally substituted hydrocarbon or heterocyclic radical), and derivatives thereof containing one or more additional nuclear substituents, are prepared by etherification of the corresponding 17#-ols. The compounds 17#-methoxy- 17α- methyl - estra - 4,9,11 - trien - 3 - one (see Specification 1,127,746) and 17#-tetrahydropyranyloxy - estra - 4,9,11 - trien - 3 - one (see Specification 1,099,006) are disclaimed. The 3- ketals of Formula I may be converted to the 3- ones by hydrolysis. The novel 3-ketals of 17#-hydroxy-estra-4,9, 11 - trien - 3 - one and of 17α- methyl - 17#- hydroxy - estra - 4,9,11 - trien - 3 - one are prepared by reduction of the corresponding 17- ones or by ketalization of the corresponding 3-ones. The compounds of Formula I are stated to possess anabolizing and androgenic activities and may be made up with suitable vehicles into pharmaceutical compositions which may be administered orally, parenterally, rectally or topically.</p> |
