PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for a tire of which workability, low fuel cost, rubber strength, abrasion resistance and crack growth resistance are improved in a good balance, and to provide a pneumatic tire using the same.SOLUTION: The invention relates to a rubber composition for a tire containing a rubber constituent, silica, a silane coupling agent containing a mercapto group, and a polysulfide compound represented by the formula (I) and/or (II), and having the total content of a butadiene rubber and a styrene-butadiene rubber of 1 to 70 mass% and the content of a polyisoprene rubber of 0 to 99 mass% in 100 mass% of the rubber constituent, and the content of the silica of 10 to 80 pts.mass based on 100 pts.mass of the rubber constituent.
