[Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A photo-electric cell comprises a base-plate 1. having a superposed semi - conducting layer 3, e.g. of selenium, upon which is a counter-electrode 5, between part of the selenium layer and the counter-electrode 5 there being a thin insulating layer 4, e.g. a paper, the surface of which in contact with the counterelectrode is flush with that of the selenium layer. A cover-plate 6 may be applied against the counter-electrode, and the insulating layer 4, which may cover a strip round the periphery of the disc, is confined to. an area upon which pressure is to be applied.
