PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkali-soluble resin excellent in terms of hygroscopic characteristic and foam dissipating quickness and usable favorably as a viscosity adjustment agent, etc.SOLUTION: The provided alkali-soluble resin is an alkali-soluble resin obtained by polymerizing monomer components within an aqueous solution; the alkali-soluble resin includes a compound having a surfactant performance at a content equal to or lower than 0.5 mass% with respect to 100 mass% of the total monomer components and is obtained by polymerizing, under conditions where the content of a chain transfer agent with respect to 100 mass% of the total monomer components is below 0.0001 mass%, monomer components including 10-95 mass% of an ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer with respect to 100 mass% of the total monomer components; moreover, the alkali-soluble resin exhibits a viscosity of 100 mPa s or above as measured within an aqueous solution with a pH of 7 and a non-volatile content of 2 mass% at 25°C in compliance with JIS K 7117-1. |
