PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an atomic oscillator that consumes less power.SOLUTION: The atomic oscillator provided includes: an alkali metal cell encapsulating an alkali metal; a light source for radiating laser light to the alkali metal cell; and a photodetector for detecting light transmitted through the alkali metal cell. The light source is frequency-modulated to generate sidebands, and laser light of two different wavelengths, which correspond to the sidebands, is incident on the alkali metal cell, so that a light absorption characteristic by a quantum interference effect of two types of resonant light controls the modulation frequency. The sidebands are second or higher order sidebands.
