PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retainer for a constant velocity universal joint, the constant velocity universal joint and a drive shaft which is excellent in strength characteristics and wear resistance, does not cause the lowering of productivity, suppresses a manufacturing cost and permits gloval material procurement.SOLUTION: In retainers 5, 65, 95 for a constant velocity universal joint provided with a plurality of pockets 20, 80, 110 which are formed in a ring shape having substantially even thickness and store torque transition balls on the circumferential direction thereof, the retainers 5, 65, 95 are formed with a carbon steel which contain 0.41 to 0.51 mass% of C, 0.10 to 0.35 mass% of Si, 0.60 to 0.90 mass% of Mn, 0.005 to 0.030 mass% of P and 0.002 to 0.035 mass% of S, the remaining comprising Fe and inevitably remaining elements upon steel making and refining. Further, the retainers are subjected to carbonitriding, quenching and tempering as heat treatment and lateral surfaces 23, 83, 113 of the pockets 20, 80, 110 are formed by finishing working after the heat treatment. |
