A receiver system (12) automatically accords with a broadcast signal which is variable in terms of the number of transmitted channels, a signal coding form, and a modulation format for suitability (20). The system receives a digital data stream which represents video information encoded to one of multiple other formats and transmitted to one of multiple transmission channels. The system includes processors (17, 55, 20, 25, 30, 50) for confirming and capturing program guide information including multiple channel maps. The channel maps combine the transmission channels with a video channel output and are combined with an encoding format. The system also includes an adaptive decoder (35, 40, 45) in order to decode a bit stream which provides a video channel output in response to the program guide information.
