In a process for dealkylation of alkylbenzenes in the presence of hydrogen at 500-900‹ C., at least part of the gaseous products (after removal of benzene product) comprising mainly CH 4 and H 2 are subjected to a methane-steam reforming reaction to form a mixture containing H 2 , CO and CO 2 , the CO and CO 2 are removed conventionally, and the hydrogen then recycled to the dealkylation reaction. The combined process obviates the need for an external supply of hydrogen.
