摘要 <PICT:1021850/C1/1> <PICT:1021850/C1/2> <PICT:1021850/C1/3> Sheet glass is heated by, and simultaneously supported upon a gas which is caused to issue as a diffused flow through the porous wall of a plenum beneath the sheet to form a substantially uniform and continuous pressure support zone, the gas temperature being above the deformation temperature of the glass, and the gas exhausting at points within the pressure zone to a zone of lower pressure. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus is tilted from the horizontal. A glass sheet is conveyed by mechanical rollers into a heating zone 11 where radiant heaters above and below the sheet raise its temperature to just below its deformation temperature. The sheet is then conveyed into zone 12 and on to the gas support, one of its edges contacting the friction drive rollers 90 (Fig. 4). The gas support comprises a plenum chamber 40 having a porous plate 50 forming part of its upper surface. Tubes 56 open out on to the upper face of plate 50 and extend through chamber 40 to atmosphere. Gaseous combustion products at a temperature of about 1200 DEG F. are blown into the plenum 40 and these percolate through the porous plate 50 beneath a glass sheet G heating the latter to above deformation temperature and supporting it thereon. The tubes 56 forming the exhaust ports form between 5 and 50% of the surface area of plate 50 and have a diameter of 0.050 inch compared with the plate pore sizes of 0.0002 to 0.025 inch. The proximity and size of the tubes causes the gas to exhaust with little movement. Radial heaters 36 in the roof of zone 12 prevent the sheet from warping. The sheet then passes between upper and lower cooling boxes 112, 110, and is supported upon the gases issuing from box 110 to cool it to a temperature of about 600 DEG F. The gases support the glass sheet at a distance of from 0.001 to 0.050 inch from the plate 50. The porous plate may be stainless steel or other refractory material. An alternative plenum chamber and supporting plate is described using Fig. 7 (not shown). Where desired, the porous support bed may be curved, either in its entirety for conveying curved sheets or progressively, as from flat to curved, for bending flat sheets as they travel along the support bed at the deformation temperature.
