This impact absorbing steering shaft, which absorbs impact energy by contracting during vehicular impacts and of which one end is joined to a vehicle steering wheel, is provided with: an inner shaft having at one end side thereof a linking region at the outer peripheral surface of which a male toothed section is formed; and an outer shaft at the inner peripheral surface of which a female toothed section is formed, the linking region of the inner shaft being inserted therewithin and the female toothed section being slidably linked to the male toothed section. The inner shaft has an impact absorbing region formed at the other end side from the linking region in a manner so that the outer diameter becomes greater towards the other end side of the inner shaft. |
