PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately recognize necessary characters according to the types of a document from image data read by an image reading device.SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus according to the present invention includes: first recognition means for recognizing characters included in image data read by an image reading device, and positions of the respective characters in the image data; specification means for specifying the type of a document in the image data on the basis of the characters and the respective positions of the characters recognized by the first recognition means; character information acquisition means for acquiring character information used for recognition of predetermined characters according to the type of the document specified by the specification means; second recognition means for recognizing the predetermined characters from the image data on the basis of the character information acquired by the character information acquisition means; and output means for outputting the characters recognized by the second recognition means and the image data in association with each other.
