PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition exhibiting excellent characteristics such as a maximum temperature and a minimum temperature of a nematic phase, viscosity, optical anisotropy, dielectric anisotropy, resistivity, and stability to ultraviolet rays or heat, and to provide an antioxidant having high compatibility with the liquid crystal composition and capable of imparting desired stability by addition of a small amount thereof.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition has a nematic phase and contains, as a first component, a specified antioxidant expressed by the formula, having high compatibility with the liquid crystal composition and having an excellent antioxidant function; and the liquid crystal composition may contain a specified compound having a high maximum temperature or a low viscosity as a second component, a specified compound having a high maximum temperature or large dielectric anisotropy as a third component, a specified compound having negative large dielectric anisotropy as a fourth component, and a specified antioxidant as a fifth component. |
