The method involves detecting accident involvement of a vehicle by seized collision signals (SK), and manual and automatically set-off emergency call (SN). Information (I) and an instruction (A) are output to a vehicle occupant based on acquired state variables (Z1-Z6) of a vehicle occupant behavior and automatic references (H) of the vehicle. A layer of the vehicle, a state of a door contact, a window position, a sliding roof position, a true airspeed and a belt status are recognized. Actuation of a hazard warning flasher of the vehicle and manual settling of the emergency call are detected. An independent claim is also included for a device for supporting vehicle occupants.
