The method involves arranging ultrasonic sensors (3-6) in the rear region of a motor vehicle (1), and coupling a fan (10) to a towing hitch (11) of the motor vehicle. The distance measurement values of the coupled fan detected by the ultrasonic sensors are transmitted to an electronic control device (8) of the ultrasonic sensor device (2). The distance measurement values are checked by the control device. The information about an obstacle is output to an output device (9) by assigning the distance measurement values.
