PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element which is excellent in electron-transporting property even when an electron transport layer is formed by a wet process, and achieves high luminous efficiency, a low driving voltage, and a long service life.SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element comprises: a pair of electrodes provided on a substrate; at least one light-emitting layer disposed between the pair of electrodes; and an electron transport layer disposed between either of the pair of electrodes and the light-emitting layer. The electron transport layer is formed by applying and drying a coating liquid prepared by dissolving an electron-transporting compound and a quinolinato complex of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal in a non-fluorinated alcohol solvent.
