PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine which can efficiently perform a pre-ignition suppression control for suppressing the occurrence of a pre-ignition.SOLUTION: The control device for an internal combustion engine performs a predetermined pre-ignition suppression control for suppressing the occurrence of the pre-ignition when a pre-ignition is detected. The pre-ignition suppression control is performed, only when the driving condition of an internal combustion engine reaches such a driving condition that a large pre-ignition in which the maximum cylinder pressure becomes a predetermined value or more possibly occurs when the occurrence frequency of a small pre-ignition in which the maximum cylinder pressure is lower than the predetermined value, reaches a predetermined frequency.
