[Also in Divisions C7 and G1] The temperature-responsive characteristic of a strip 16 of a nickel-titanium alloy is used to operate a valve 13 in a pipe 11 through which fluid such as that used in a fluid sprinkling system flows. The alloy strip which has been deformably twisted at a temperature below a critical temperature has one end secured to the valve stem 14 whilst the other end is secured to a block 17, a key 18 of which engages a keyway 21 in a boss 22 to prevent rotation of the block. On heating the alloy above its critical temperature, the valve is caused to rotate as the alloy strip returns to its undeformed state, thereby permitting the fluid to flow through the pipe.</p> |
