Vacuum cleaner e.g. floor vacuum cleaner (1) has housing (4) in which a motor-operated suction fan and a device for generating the power supply of the fan motor are disposed. A battery and a cable drum are arranged in the housing as permanently integrated components so as to selectively operate the vacuum cleaner on battery power and on mains voltage. An independent claim is also included for the method of operation of the vacuum cleaner.
