The present invention relates to a converter having a plurality of sub modules consisting of an energy storage unit and a power semiconductor and connected to each other in series, wherein each of the sub modules is configured to be composed of two half-bridge units and a simple and inexpensive auxiliary circuit unit added between the half-bridge units, thereby blocking or reducing fault current by letting the introduced fault current flow to the energy storage unit of each of the half-bridge units. A converter according to the present invention includes a plurality of sub modules connected to each other in series, wherein each of the sub modules comprises: a first half-bridge unit including a first energy storage unit and a plurality of first power semiconductors each of which are connected to the first energy storage unit in parallel, and which are connected to each other in series; a second half-bridge unit including a second energy storage unit and a plurality of second power semiconductors each of which are connected to the second energy storage unit in parallel, and which are connected to each other in series; and an auxiliary circuit unit connecting the first half-bridge unit and the second half-bridge unit, wherein the auxiliary circuit unit is configured to include a third power semiconductor and a diode. |
