The autocollimator (10) has a collimation lens (20) and a deflecting mirror (22) provided in a measuring/detecting path (18), by which a coupled measuring light beam is collimated before the beam emerges from the autocollimator for striking on an optical surface. A monitoring screen (24) and a camera (26) detect the beam reflected back at the optical surface after running back of the beam along the path and decoupling by a beam splitter (16). The mirror allows emerging of the beam from the autocollimator in a direction transverse to a longitudinal direction (L) of the autocollimator. The camera is a CCD camera. An independent claim is also included for a method for checking an alignment of an optical surface of a laser system.
