In a gear-box comprising two parallel gear trains, back lash in the gearing is eliminated by having one gear 25, in one gear train, rotatably journalled on a shaft 27, the gear 25 having cam faces 40 which are engaged by rollers 42 mounted in the ends of pistons 44 disposed in a drum 46 which is keyed to the shaft 27. On the application of hydraulic pressure through tubing 54, the pistons move out of the drum 46, and the effect of the rollers 42 bearing on the cam faces 40 is to rotate the gear 25 and shaft 27 in opposite directions and to preload the gear train with a torque which is greater than that to be transmitted. In a modification, the pistons have their axes located in a plane transverse to the axis of the shaft. |
