An object of the present is to thoroughly check size defects of a steel bar which is being rolled in a crude rolling line. A shape checking apparatus (10) of the present invention is to check a steel bar which is being rolled in a roller (7) and comprises: a light irradiation unit (11) irradiating a light cutting line (S) so as to intersect to a transport direction of a steel bar (W); an imaging unit (12) imaging the steel bar (W) which the light cutting line (S) is irradiated through imaging lens (13); and a shape testing unit (15) of the steel bar (W) by applying a triangulation method to the light cutting line (S) in the image taken in the imaging unit.
